THE NINETY DAYS
I spent eight years on submarines. That is the only kind of commitment this room runs on, and it is decided on the first call.
You name the one thing you are going to create in ninety days, out loud, in front of the room. Then you shut the hatch on it.
You bring what you have been telling yourself is just how you are. Not the flattering ones. The ones that sound like plain description of fact.
You put one of them down in front of everybody, and say what is true instead.
Four weeks of work comes back to the room. What you built, what you did not, and who you were being either way.
You cut it down to something you can say standing in a line with no phone in your hand.
You read it out loud and the room hears it. That is the last ninety minutes and it is the reason the room existed.
Two of the gaps are four weeks long. Those are not a break. That is where a man writes hundreds of lines.
About three hours a week. The work between calls happens inside the life you already have, not on top of it.
